For Queer and Now 2023, Tate's Library and Archive team are putting on a Show and Share displaying highlights from its vast national collection

Queering the library and archive will explore narratives of LGBTIQ+ art history and ask what role does the museum play in the formation, collection, and promotion of hidden narratives of art history? How do libraries and archives make visible the invisible?

Instead of defining a canon of LGBTIQ+ artists, this show and share will instead explore a range of themes through a curated selection of zines, artists’ books, photobooks and other published material from Tate Library, presented alongside sketchbooks, letters, photographs and archival material from Tate Archive.

For listings and more information, see Queering the Library

This event is part of Queer and Now, a festival dedicated to the powerful role of LGBTQIA+ art and culture in the UK.

Jane Bramwell

Following a career in Further Education libraries, Jane Bramwell (she, her) joined as Tate Librarian in 2007, and became Head of Library, Archive and Collection Access in January 2009. Jane was the Project Lead on Archives & Access and continues to support other research, cataloguing, and digitisation projects at Tate with a focus on improving access to Tate’s Library and Archive collections. She is an active member of ARLIS UK & Ireland - holding the position of Chair from 2019-2021, and other UK based art library and archive networks.

Gustavo Grandal Montero

Gustavo Grandal Montero (he, him) is an art librarian and researcher, currently Library Collections and Engagement Manager at Tate. Trained as an art historian, he writes and presents regularly on topics such as art documentation, artists’ publications and concrete poetry, and has contributed to a range of academic and professional journals and monographs. He is Editor of the Art Libraries Journal (Cambridge University Press).

Show and Share invites visitors to explore highlights from the Library and Archive collections. Previous highlights have included letters, sketchbooks, artists’ books, zines, catalogues, ephemera, photographs, and other special collections.

Each display is curated to a specific theme or collection and includes a guided talk from the Library and Archive team, as well as occasional guest talks and performances. Show and Share displays provide a unique viewing and handling experience highlighting art and ideas found in the Library and Archive collections.
