Artist biography

Craig Kauffman born 1932

American West Coast painter and sculptor, who works mainly with acrylic and plastic. Born in Los Angeles. Studied at the University of Southern California School of Architecture 1950-2 and at the University of California at Los Angeles 1952-6. First one-man exhibition at the Felix Landau Gallery, Los Angeles, 1953. Travelled in Europe 1956-7, and later spent 1960-2 in Paris. Painted Abstract Expressionist pictures with biomorphic imagery, then began in 1963 to make reliefs of vacuum-formed clear plastic in luxuriant colours. Taught painting and sculpture at the University of California, Irvine, 1967-72. Founded in 1970 a Peripatetic Artists Guild with Robert Morris, announcing his availability for a wide range of commissions anywhere in the world. Lives in Laguna Beach, California.

Craig Kauffman (March 31, 1932 – May 9, 2010) was an artist who has exhibited since 1951. Kauffman's primarily abstract paintings and wall relief sculptures are included in over 20 museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tate Modern, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
