Step into the great noise of Bow Gamelan Ensemble with an evening of film and conversation

Formed by Anne Bean, Paul Burwell (1949 – 2007) and Richard Wilson in 1983, Bow Gamelan Ensemble are known for their powerful, large-scale performances using unexpected sounds and pyrotechnics.

Join us for an evening of short films, including the premiere of Maps of Other Possibilities, a new documentary about the group, made in collaboration with Alex Eisenberg. Hear from Bean and Wilson on their longstanding partnership and the spirit of possibility that underpins their work.

This event has been provided by Tate Gallery on behalf of Tate Enterprises Ltd.

Anne Bean

Anne Bean is a London-based artist working with sculpture, installation, sound, photography, painting and drawing, whose artistic practice has been pivotal in the development of live and performance art in the UK. Captivated by process and collaboration Bean works as the ‘space-between’ - a receiver, receptor, and conjuror. These strategies enable her to plug into time and timelessness. Since 1970 Anne Bean has presented solo and collaborative projects, worldwide. She recently received the 2024 Paul Hamlyn Foundation Visual Arts Award.

Richard Wilson

Richard Wilson is one of Britain’s most renowned sculptors. He is internationally celebrated for his interventions in architectural space which draw heavily for their inspiration from the worlds of engineering and construction. Wilson has exhibited nationally and internationally for over forty years. Often singled out for his concentration on site-specific projects, it is Wilson’s name that has become synonymous with the idea of installation in Britain.

Louisa Buck

Louisa Buck is a writer and broadcaster on contemporary art. She is a Contributing Editor and London Contemporary Art Correspondent for The Art Newspaper and a regular reviewer and commentator on BBC radio and TV and a range of publications.

She is the author of a number of catalogue essays for institutions including Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, ICA London, MCA Australia and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

Her books include Moving Targets 2: A User’s Guide to British Art Now (Tate 2000); Owning Art: The Contemporary Art Collector’s Handbook (Cultureshock Media 2006). Commissioning Contemporary Art : A Handbook for Curators, Collectors and Artists Thames & Hudson 2012)  Going Public, a report, commissioned by ACE and Museums Sheffield (2016).

Louisa was a judge for the 2005 Turner Prize and is a founding member of The Gallery Climate Coalition.
