A smiling person with long hair and glasses sits at a table. The table has a rainbow-coloured covering and has papers and leaflets on it. In the background there is a banner that says London Metropolitan Archives and poster that says community archives

Discover the collections of London Metropolitan Archives and how to look for LGBTQIA+ histories

London Metropolitan Archives look after collections that the tell the stories of London and Londoners since 1067.  These records contain many LGBTQIA+ lives and experiences. Come along to our stall to hear about our work preserving and sharing these histories, see some of our delightful collection of ephemera and hear some truly moving oral histories.

In an activation session from 12.15–13.00, Tom Furber, Engagement and Learning Officer at London Metropolitan Archives, will share some of the LGBTQIA+ histories and experiences contained in their collections. Tom will touch upon some of LMA’s oldest LGBTQIA+ documents dating from the 14th century, how to search 'against the grain' and hear about how they work with communities to preserve their own histories.

This event is part of Queer and Now, a festival dedicated to the powerful role of LGBTQIA+ art and culture in the UK.

Tom Furber (he/him), Engagement and Learning Officer at London Metropolitan Archives, has worked on various programmes and projects that cultivate and share LGBTQ+ perspectives on archives and history. These include the award-winning Speak Out London Diversity City, the ALMS conference and Out Loud: London Metropolitan LGBTQ+ Archives.

Tate Britain's step-free entrance is on Atterbury Street. It has automatic sliding doors and there is a ramp down to the entrance with central handrails.

There is a lift between the Lower and Main floors. Alternatively you can take the stairs.

  • Accessible and standard toilets are located on the Lower floor.
  • A Changing Places toilet is not currently available.
  • Ear defenders can be borrowed from the ticket desk on the Lower floor.
  • A quiet space is available.
